About BR
Beyond Resolved is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2019 founded by a group of high school debaters, dedicated to promoting inclusion and equality in debate. We target these issues through a variety of initiatives and projects, including (but not limited to): our scholarship program for debate tournament fees, our LGBTQIA initiative, our wealth and class initiative, and our mentorship program. Our mission is to promote equity and inclusion in debate, by creating safe spaces for debaters to discuss their experiences, and by giving pathways for lower income students to enter this activity. However, many of our initiatives do require funding, which is why we’re asking for donations today.
Why Contribute?
Challenging teens to critically think and learn about social and political issues that affect them or millions of others around the world, Debate trains teens to be able to argue, communicate, research, publicly speak, and advocate for themselves and others.
The American Debate League explains that “While only 50 percent of high school students in urban schools graduate, ninety percent of urban high school debaters graduate... They also score better on ACT and SAT tests, get into better colleges, and perform better once in college,” while National Association of Urban Debate Leagues research finds that just participating in a debate program for a semester raises students’ grades, increases college readiness, and increases the likelihood that a student will attend a four-year college.
However, most successful debaters are upper class ones with the income to spend money to travel across the country, spend thousands on debate camps, and pay for private coaching. At the 2018 LD TOC, one of the most prestigious debate tournaments of the season, 45% of entries were from private schools with an average tuition of $29,884 while 85% of public school attendees lived in counties with incomes well above the national median. Beyond Resolved is aimed at fixing this problem and making thesis activity— and its life changing benefits— as accessible as possible.
Where does your money go?
Ethernet initiative: Getting ethernet cords for debaters without internet access. Due to COVID, many tournaments have switched to an online format, but some debaters and schools don’t have the financial resources or access to internet for tournaments, which require a bandwidth strong enough to handle high quality live streaming via Zoom. Internet access is also important to conduct online research for cases and preparation about the topic before round.
Scholarship Initiative: Giving out scholarships to qualifying debaters to attend high cost tournaments. Beyond Resolved is trying to hand out scholarships for students who can’t afford entry, travel, housing, judging, and travel fees for tournaments. Cumulatively, these fees can range up to $1000 per entry.
Tournaments: Hosting free/low-cost tournaments for debaters. Some tournaments are open to the general field of debaters while some are for only gender minorities and women (womxn in debate). These tournaments are for preparation/practice, fun, meeting new people and making friends. Entry fees are usually minimal and free for those who qualify.
BRi Camps: Hosting free/affordable summer camp workshops for debaters to improve over the summer. In-person, high quality summer debate camps are around $4,000-$7,000, while online ones usually range from $400-$2,000. The Beyond Resolved Institute (BRi) hosts an affordable summer camp hosted by vetted teachers; this year, the full price of camp was $100 for 2 weeks of instruction (3hrs/day), with fee waivers available for students that qualify. Donations are needed to cover the costs of these fee waivers.
